# Hydrogen applications: Sustainability and performance

## Extreme demands on materials

80,000 operating hours, oxygen compatibility, and cost efficiency: hydrogen technologies are subject to special standards. Components must not only function in the short term, but also perform reliably over many years—even under the harshest conditions. Our research shows that performance and sustainability can be combined in hydrogen technology.

## Recycled material in practical testing: Initial results for H₂

In initial trials, we tested the use of recycled sealing material for PEM electrolysis applications. The basic tests delivered a clear result: the material met the required values in terms of leakage, deformation, and setting behavior. This provided decisive proof of the fundamental suitability of the approach.

However, laboratory performance alone is not sufficient for a reliable overall assessment. Long-term trials and practical tests under real operating conditions are necessary to conclusively evaluate the reliability of the material. And only after the final assessment by quality assurance can a well-founded statement be made about long-term performance.

## Are recycling and hydrogen technology compatible?

The results so far show that recycling sealing materials can be a forward-looking approach for hydrogen systems. It opens up the possibility of reconciling sustainability and resource conservation with high safety and performance requirements.
