PFAS-Regulation: What remains important for fluoropolymers and seals in 2026 PFAS remains the focus of European chemicals policy
The regulation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) will remain a key issue in European chemicals policy in 2026. For companies that use or manufacture fluoropolymers and seals, one specific question remains:
How can regulatory certainty be achieved without compromising technical performance and security of supply?
The PFAS restriction process under REACH is not yet complete. At the same time, the guidelines within which industry and users will have to operate in the future are becoming increasingly stringent. IDT is actively monitoring this development and supporting customers in classifying regulatory requirements at an early stage.
PFAS restriction under REACH: What matters in 2026
The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) will continue its work on the PFAS restriction proposal in 2026. For industrial sealing applications, it remains particularly relevant that "sealing applications" continue to be considered a separate sector.
However, it is currently unclear how this sector will be specifically treated during the second public consultation phase. It therefore remains crucial for companies to closely monitor regulatory developments.
Regulatory options: Which scenarios remain relevant in 2026
The discussion on regulatory design continues to focus on three approaches:
Ban with exceptions
This scenario is still considered the most likely approach. PFAS will be restricted in principle, but temporary exemptions for certain applications – including industrial seals – will remain relevant.
Regulated industrial use
For applications without equivalent alternatives, controlled use models continue to be discussed, such as:
- closed systems
- emission monitoring
- high recycling rates
Planning and investment security
Regardless of the final regulatory model, it will be crucial in 2026 to define reliable time frames and clear criteria for exemptions and reviews.
Exchange and information
BAuA webinar on PFAS regulation
On January 13, 2026, the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) will hold an online webinar to provide information on the current status and future outlook of the PFAS restriction process under REACH.
Key topics:
- Classification of ECHA background documents
- Outlook for the SEAC consultation
- Information on the participation of companies and associations
Registration is open until January 8, 2026.
Our outlook
In 2026, it will still be crucial to reconcile regulatory requirements with technical reality. Fluoropolymers remain indispensable for many sealing applications. A risk-based, differentiated approach is therefore the key to safe and sustainable solutions.
IDT continues to monitor PFAS regulations and supports customers in the strategic selection of materials, regulatory classification, and future-proof design of sealing solutions.
